A Greek vermouth, created by the two bartenders who founded world-class Athens bar The Clumsies, has been launched in the UK.
Otto’s Athens Vermouth has been developed by Nikos Bakoulis and Vasilis Kyritsis, working with the makers of Skinos Mastiha.
It is crafted from high-quality wine, from the winemaking region of Nemea in Greece, and infused with wormwood, rose petals, olive leaves, oregano, thyme, citrus fruits and vanilla.
At 17% ABV, the finished product is slightly bitter in flavour with fresh rose petal, citric and vanilla tones, followed by a balanced sweetness with a lemon and orange freshness in the mouth.
Available in 75cl bottles, it has been introduced in the UK through Amathus Drinks which also distributes Skinos Mastiha liqueurs.
The new brand is named after Otto who became the first modern king of Greece in 1832 and went on to make Athens the Greek capital in 1840. Ioannis Vouher created the first Greek vermouth by appointment to King Otto, which has been the inspiration for the modern new recipe.
Nikos and Vasilis opened The Clumsies in 2012, quickly seeing it enter the list of the World’s 50 Best Bars, where last year it was at number nine in the world.
